Municipal Infrastructure

We view our role on development projects as a proactive one, to ensure that each work plan is expedited and our clients' needs are perceived as priorities. This philosophy combined with a commitment to open interaction with our clients is unique and has consistently allowed GREENLAND® to achieve methodical, practical, yet often innovative approaches to problem solving, resulting in viable, cost-effective results. We offer a breadth of experience on subdivision designs (grading, servicing and storm water management); site remediation and planning; water and wastewater infrastructure; project management; public consultation; and, construction administration.

As a result of our extensive master servicing plan and environmental assessment experience with water supply, wastewater treatment and stormwater management projects, GREENLAND® developed an adaptable “Pay for Performance and Life-Cycle Cost Public-Private Partnership (PPP)” business model. The model has been used to-date for municipality and First Nation projects. This ecosystem-based approach is now being used for community infrastructure projects involving new GREENLAND® joint ventures. This PPP model can address watershed-wide cumulative impacts and climate change concerns.

Our municipal infrastructure team uses proprietary decision support systems and provides these consulting services:

Drinking Water

  • Source Water Protection, Master Servicing and Environmental Assessment Plans;
  • Water Treatment Plant Studies and Design;
  • Water Pumping Station and Distribution Studies and Design; and,
  • Construction Management and Operational Support.

Wastewater

  • Process Support, Evaluation, Master Servicing and Environmental Assessment Plans;
  • Wastewater Collection, Pumping Station and Wastewater Equalization Studies and Designs;
  • Wastewater Treatment Plant and Stormwater Management Facility Studies and Designs;
  • Biosolids and Landfill Leachate Management Studies and Designs; and,
  • Construction Management and Operational Support.


As each project requires a tailor-made approach, GREENLAND® knows the necessary planning, engineering and consultation tasks. Our team driven solutions serve as ‘blueprints’ for sustainable development.

We have developed many defendable infrastructure designs for urban land growth areas. These solutions have also included rural and recreational aesthetics, as well as economic opportunities afforded by the new development and preservation of ecosystems for the long-term health and benefit of all residents and stakeholders.

Our project approach identifies solutions that serve individual developments and those for the wider community. This provides the basis for effective staging and implementation of provisions for financing (such as our PPP model).

County of Simcoe

The County of Simcoe is the upper tier government and planning authority for most of the South Georgian Bay – Lake Simcoe Source Water Protection Region. The County, in partnership with its member municipalities, other levels of government, floodplain management agencies and two (2) conservation authorities, also provides leadership through policy, and actively in the restoration and protection of the environmental health and quality of these watersheds. As you know, in order to comply with, and be environmentally proactive with respect to the Province of Ontario’s “Places to Grow” legislation, the County of Simcoe utilized innovative decision support tools such as Greenland’s CANWET™ model. In 2012, CANWET™ was also used by the County to prepare a “Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Visioning Strategy”. To this day, the information in the Strategy’s final report is used by local municipalities, development interests and other stakeholders as a background reference to help identify sustainable development solutions.
 
This letter confirms the County of Simcoe's commitment of support which includes initially facilitating the introduction of this landmark international collaboration with all 16 local municipalities, other governments (small and large) and other agencies that partner now with the County of Simcoe on land use planning; infrastructure renewal; and flooding risk/damage reduction initiatives.

Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation

The Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation (ICCA) is a national applied research centre that focuses on mobilizing practical and cost-effective solutions to address climate change and extreme weather events. To this end, the ICCA is an incubator of new adaptation ideas, conducting research, knowledge mobilization and promoting initiatives aimed at de-risking the negative impacts of a changing climate and extreme weather. One of ICCA’s concerns is a growing uninsurable housing market in Canada relative to sewer backup.
 
ICCA believes the advanced technology and features of the SafeSump system can be instrumental to mitigating basement flood potential.  I have one of the first prototypes of the SafeSump system installed in my home. I have interacted directly with the start-up founder. I view him as entrepreneurial and passionate, and have met other members of his team with whom I was similarly impressed.  I am also familiar with Greenland Consulting Engineers, and congratulate SafeSump Inc. on their choice to create a joint “SafeSump” venture with Greenland.
 
ICCA looks forward to a supportive relationship with SafeSump Inc. upon the larger scale availability of their much-needed technology.
